Passive voice คือประโยคที่ประธานเป็นผู้ถูกกระทำ และให้ความสำคัญไปที่สิ่งที่ถูกกระทำมากกว่าผู้กระทำ ซึ่งจะตรงกันข้ามกับสิ่งที่เราเรียนมาในบทเรียนนี้ที่เรียกว่า active voice
ในการใช้ passive voice บางครั้งผู้กระทำจะถูกละเว้นไม่พูดถึง หรือหากมีการพูดถึงก็มักจะอยู่ในรูป by ตามด้วยผู้กระทำ ตัวอย่างเช่น
- Active voice: The chef cooked the meal. - พ่อครัวปรุงอาหาร(ในอดีต)
- Passive voice: The meal was cooked (by the chef). - อาหารถูกปรุง(โดยพ่อครัว)
